The Martin A. Nash Bracelet Mystery
(A Johnny Thompson and Martin A Nash Story)

The Martin A. Nash Bracelet Mystery A Johnny Thompson and Martin A Nash Story

I had recently purchased a Bracelet that belonged to Martin A. Nash, engraved with his name and all but, I was a bit leery that the bracelet may possibly not really have been Martin A. Nash's bracelet. So, after combing through old videos, Books and photos, I felt reasonably sure that my bracelet looked like the same bracelet Martin A. Nash used to wear but, I was just not sure so I tracked down some people who might know more.Jamy Ian Swiss wrote a blog on Martin A. Nash's passing so, I contacted him. Jamy informed me all about what he knew and let me know that he was pretty sure that Johnny Thompson actually was willed or given Martin's Bracelet by the M.A.N. estate and that would mean that Johnny Thompson actually owns Martin's bracelet. After that conversation, I contacted Johnny Thompson. We emailed back and forth and he called me and we discussed the properties of the bracelets and tried to compare over the phone and emails. And because Johnny Thompson and Martin A. Nash were close, I knew that what he was telling me was the pure truth... that, at this point, we are both pretty sure that Johnny Thompson owned the legitimate Martin A. Nash bracelet and I had been duped. But this thought kept nagging me, why would someone, anyone, copy Martin A. Nash's bracelet? To what end? So, after Johnny Thompson and I tried to figure out what and why etc., he informed me that he would be attending/working at "Magic Live" in Vegas 08/04-08/08 2018 and that I should come out and we can see the bracelets and compare them side by side etc. I could not attend the Magic Live week so we left it at that. Then Johnny Thompson let me know that he was doing a very small hush hush lecture with Rick Maue & Paul Vigil and I was sent an invitation to attend. So, I went out for the lecture and I happened to met up with Steven Reynolds and we hit it off and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at the taping.  After the live 3 hour taping, Johnny, Paul and Rick were all nice enough to hang out and talk.  Johnny and I looked at the bracelets, he actually took his bracelet off and we compared the two and they were not alike in size or metals, they did have the same pips on them but, that was all. Actually Meir Yedid was standing there and we were all talking about the bracelets and we all agreed that the bracelet I had was obviously not the same as the one Johnny Thompson had. Yedid and Thompson hoped I had not paid a lot for it and were apologetic that I had been duped and we all had a laugh. After I had arrived home, I was thinking about it and thought that maybe, for reasons unknown, Martin A. Nash had two bracelets made. So, I started to really comb over the old tapes and newer DVDs, The "Videonics Series", the "Infinity And Beyond" tapes, the "Charming Cheat Show and Lecture", "The Award Winning Card Magic", the Martin A. Nash books and pictures. What I found was the following:The bracelet that I have is definitely the bracelet on the early tapes, the clasp and size and width of the chain everything was exact. The eye opening moment was when I was scouring over "The Charming Cheat Show and Lecture" (which may be the last commercial video Martin A. Nash filmed) and there it was, plain as day, on that DVD/Tape was the actual bracelet that Johnny Thompson owns and was given by Martin A. Nash estate. The size, the clasp the metals, the chain, everything! This is the very bracelet that Martin A. Nash owned and Johnny Thompson had and the one that I had compared my bracelet to.So the end result and to sum it all up is the following:
  • Martin A. Nash had 2 bracelets made
  • One bracelet made earlier in his life
  • One bracelet made later in his life
  • The bracelet that I have is the earlier one that Martin A. Nash has on in the earlier videos, it is the smaller of the two
  • The bracelet that Johnny Thompson owned is the much larger, nicer and more elegant one that was purchased later in his life.
After running this by Johnny we agreed this must be the answer to the Martin A. Nash Bracelet Mystery. It was nice that Johnny was so helpful and eager to try and help in anyway he could at the time. He could have easily blown me off and never talked to me about it at all but, he did not do that. He actually went far beyond and out of his way to help out and to try and figure out the mystery. He will be missed.-The FOCM

Seems to me,
New Effect Trailer Videos Are Exactly What The Trick Is!

These new video trailors for effects seem to be more of a magic trick than the effect itself. When you see a new trailer for most effects, they have staged crowds, actors acting amazed and dumbfounded, amazing lights and incredible cinematic scenescapes and musical score to punctuate the effect and mood.Of course we all realize that all of this video editing can be done by anyone with iMovie. But, most high end editors are going to be using Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas Pro or maybe even Avid Media Composer. The point here is not what they are using but how they are using it. It seems that there is more importance on dramatic music, filters and shoot locations rather than the effect. You see some of the effect being performed and the “reactions” they are getting but you can not really tell what the effect is from top to bottom, in its entirety. If you do a search on the name of the performer and/or the effect you are likely to see someone else performing the effect in its entirety and sometimes, it is even the actual performer/creator.It is in this longer, uncut footage, without the lighting, perfect camera angles, special cuts and dramatic extras, you can actually see the effect en total. It is right then and there you may say “Wow, that is really great, I have to buy it.” or you may be saying “Crap, is that all there is to it? It is just a force, a diagonal jog, pass, double lift, a ridiculous card counting sequence and equivoque kind of thing” and then you would probably not buy it.The bottom line is that it is very hard to tell the difference between what is a really good effect/move and what is just perfect camera angles and staging. But, if you look a little deeper and you have some knowledge of card magic, magic theory and even just knowledge of sleights, you can usually ascertain whether or not an effect or move is worth buying. The FOCM TeamFOCM Dedicated to the Dissemination, Preservation and Advancement of Card Magic

Seems To Me,
All Of The New Tricks Are Amazing and The Best?!

Every now and again, an amazing new effect or move does come along that you truly have to get and have to put it straight into your act but, not very often. There are a lot of magic stores that seem to be claiming things like:

"This Effect Is So Stunning It Is Going Straight Into My Act!"

"The Most Amazing Trick I Have Ever Seen..."

"The Most Incredible Thing I Have Ever Seen!

"

"Leaves Audiences Blown Away And In A Stupor!"

"The Best And Perfect Mentalist Effect To Come Along In Decades!"

"It Fooled Me Bad!"

"Everything Can Be Examined."Most of these effects or moves that are new, are not really new at all, just repackaged redesigned same 'ol. Now, don't get us wrong, there are some new things out there and some great and amazing things but they tend to get buried and can only be found by word of mouth and your own discovery. The problem is because the pitchmen and hype-men are throwing everything into the same bowl and telling you that "everything" is the greatest well, it makes it a bit hard to sift through. It is very akin to "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" the problem is that most magicians have fallen for the pitch of a particular effect or two only to find out that the effect ends up not being that good. The problems are great and many i.e. it has horrible angles, the gaff is clunky, the card effect is really all math and memorization, you have to ditch gaffs, the effect is long winded or any of the many pitfalls. So, most magicians then become leery and in the end usually become very particular and discerning when it comes to purchasing items and stores actually start to lose sales. Now, as stated before, every once in a while something does come along that truly is amazing and yes, you do have to have it!  But, there is no way that all 25 of the effects that came out this last month are all amazing and that you have to have them all.Take the time to read all of those magic books you have been acquiring that are on your bookshelf, read them all cover to cover.  Watch all of those videos you have been purchasing from beginning to end and you will start to see that you can and will gain a huge amount of knowledge about magic effects, magic methods, magic theory and magic history.Armed with all of that great knowledge, you will be able to decipher through the B.S. and hype and you will be able to make sound decisions about purchasing that next, new amazing effect.
